The project explores young learners’ metaphoric competence and metalinguistic awareness in Croatian as L1 and English as a Foreign Language.
The aim of the project is twofold. One is to establish which lexical items with metaphorical meanings are included in textbooks and how they are used in language classes vs. subject-matter classes. The aim is also to determine the ways in which metaphor is used in textbooks in teaching L1 and L2.
Guidelines will be created for teachers on how to use metaphor in class and raise learners’ awareness of the link between literal and metaphorical meanings of lexical items. Explicit teaching of metaphor is aimed at developing young learners’ lexical competence as well as metalinguistic awareness required for the comprehension of textbook discourse.
